Flash Tutorial: Creating a Simple Mask

Masks are useful if you want to single out an animation for only one part of an image. You'll find various uses for them down the line. The best way to tell you what a mask is is just to show you.

1. Import an image, any image. I've used a panda image.

2. Create a new layer so that it is on top of the layer your image is on.

Note: You can create new layer by right clicking on your current layer and selecting "Insert Layer."

3. Right click on your new layer and select "Mask." See image 1.

4. Now you can see that your original layer is indented beneath your second layer. The mask will cover all layers indented beneath it.

5. Make sure your mask layer is selected. Use the rectangle tool (or oval, or any shape) to draw a few shapes on your mask layer. I drew three shapes:

6. You're done! Press ctrl + enter to see your results.

What should be shown are only the masked parts - or the parts of the image that you drew shapes over.
