Meta tags are a good way to optimize how your site looks in search engines (This is called SEO - search engine optimization) as well as to help search engines find and classify you. They're not an instant solution, but help is still help, right?

Meta tags go between your <head> and </head> tags. Typically they are placed immediately after your title. There are two types of meta tags that are the most commonly used, and those are the ones I will cover.

Google ignores meta keywords, but many other search engines still use them! So there you go, good luck customizing your pages with meta tags!
