Articles: Attributes of a Good Site
I've browsed a lot of sites in my time and definitely not all of them are the same quality. Here's some basic (and pretty obvious) tips for beginners to make a good web site that people will want to come back to!
- Be Nice. Lots of people can make pretty sites, but they can also be an ass about it. I hate the elitism that sometimes goes on in the web design community and if you have your head stuck up your arse, I wouldn't want to visit your site no matter how nice it is otherwise.
- Know What You're Doing. I wouldn't really make a fansite about Naruto if I know nothing about the series, right? Be knowledgeable about the topic of your website; it shows.
- BE UNIQUE! I cannot emphasize this enough. There's tons of sites out there about just about everything. You want to have attributes that makes your site stand out, whether it's theme or layout or content (all three preferably). You want things that other sites don't have. Spend a long time thinking and coming up with your own ideas. Plus, if you're unique enough to stand out in visitors' minds, they'll likely come back!
- Have a Pretty Layout. In my eyes design matters less than content, but it still matters a hell of a lot. Don't just throw something on a blank page, and definitely don't half-ass your design. Be patient; I worked on, scrapped, and revise my layout for days. You want something aesthetically pleasing that awes the visitor at first sight (first impressions count, a lot!) but it should also be neat and have easy to figure out navigation. Have text that's easy to read. Also, a good color scheme, by god; that helps a lot.
- Have Ample Content. No matter how good your layout is, if you barely have any content in your site, I wouldn't deem your site a good one. Keep in mind that while how good your site looks may impress visitors and help them to remember it, the reason they're at your site in the first place is for your content.
- Have Quality Content. I see a lot of design sites out there that use beautiful layouts for the site itself, but the free layouts that they provide are really a step down from that. If you can make better layouts, why half-ass it for the ones in your content? Depending on what your content is, spend a lot of time on making it the best it can be. People will really notice the quality.
- Don't be annoying. Of course what's annoying is in the eye of the beholder, but... Depending on what type of site you have and what direction you want to go with it, you should regulate how professional your attitude is, how many smileys you use, etc. accordingly. Regardless of what your site is, please use correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization! Few people are going to go back to a site with content dAtZ wrItTiN LieK dIs lol Kz?
There's always more you can do to make your site awesome, but keep these basics in mind! I'll get back to you if I think of something else. Good luck!
